Walking into a martial arts class for the first time can bring up all kinds of questions. One of the most common is simple:
“What do I wear?”
If you’re new to class at Balance Martial Arts, there’s no need to buy anything special for your first visit. No matter your age or fitness level, the most important thing is feeling comfortable, safe, and ready to move.
What to Wear for Your First Class
Before you receive a uniform, wear comfortable athletic clothes. Something breathable, flexible, and fitted enough so instructors can see your body position, but not so tight that it restricts your range of motion.
Here’s what works best:
- A fitted T-shirt or athletic top
- Athletic pants, leggings, or shorts that stretch
- No jeans, dresses, or skirts
- No belts, jewelry, or watches
- Hair tied back, if long
- Bare feet (no shoes or socks on the mats)
This applies to everyone, kids, teens, adults, and families. Movement is a big part of every class, so you want to be able to jump, stretch, kick, and turn without worrying about your outfit.
Once You Join: The Uniform Becomes Part of Training
Once you’re officially enrolled, students receive a martial arts uniform. Often called a gi (pronounced “ghee”), the uniform is made of lightweight, durable fabric. It’s designed for movement and sweat, and becomes a regular part of class helping students build focus and discipline.
Every program uses a version of the uniform that fits the student’s age and needs.
Pre-K & Kinder Program (ages 3-5)
The youngest students wear soft, lightweight uniforms that are easy to move in and comfortable for short attention spans. It helps these little ones feel included and ready to follow the class routine.
Youth Martial Arts (ages 6-11)
At this stage, students begin learning forms, strikes, and structured drills. The uniform becomes part of their identity in class. Putting it on signals that it’s time to focus and give their best effort.
Teen Martial Arts (ages 12-17)
Teens wear the full uniform and are expected to take ownership of their appearance. A properly tied belt and a clean uniform show maturity and pride, two things we reinforce in class.
Adult Martial Arts (18+)
Most adults enjoy the simplicity of the uniform. There’s no guessing about what to wear or worrying about gym clothes. The gi becomes part of your routine and allows full focus on training.
Family Martial Arts
When families train together, wearing the uniform as a group adds to the experience. Everyone, regardless of age, is following the same standard and supporting each other.
Tai Chi (18+)
Tai Chi students typically wear relaxed, breathable clothing rather than a gi. Think loose cotton pants, a light top, and socks or bare feet. The focus is on soft movement and breath, so comfort is a priority.
Do You Need Shoes?
Martial arts classes take place on padded mats, and all students remove shoes before stepping on the training floor. Bare feet help with balance, grip, and safety.
If a student has a medical need or foot condition, special indoor-only martial arts shoes may be allowed. Speak with an instructor ahead of time to make arrangements.
How to Feel Confident on Day One
It’s completely normal to feel unsure on your first day. Here are a few easy ways to feel more prepared:
- Bring a water bottle
- Tie back long hair
- Trim fingernails and toenails
- Leave all jewelry at home
- Arrive a few minutes early
You’ll be greeted by an instructor who can answer questions, show you around, and guide you through class. There’s no need to memorize anything or perform at a certain level. Just show up, try your best, and enjoy the experience.
Training Starts Simple Then Grows With You
No matter which program you choose, the training is built to match your level and help you grow gradually. From three-year-olds in our Kinder program to grandparents in Tai Chi, everyone starts somewhere and no one is expected to know it all on day one.
